The Blues Festival of Barcelona presents with great pleasure, the following musicians for the 2014th Edition:
Miguel Talavera Power Trio
Alternating versions with self-composed songs with a repertoire based on the blues-rock with a certain dose of jazz and funk, their influences ranging from Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix. You’ll ensure a decibel blues session in the hands of an experienced bluesman that has collaborated with artists like Big Mama, The Supremes, La Vella Dixieland, the Orquesta Mondragón or Angela Brown.
Santos Puertas
Santos Puertas was born the same day as WC Handy in a small town called Sant Just d’Esvern, on the outskirts of Barcelona. However, he has devoted himself with determination and effort, passion and talent to capture and express through the guitar and voice, the sound and essence of the blues and American roots music. After a career spanning more than 20 years, finally in 2012 he moved to Dallas, TX, where he began his solo career which combines with the 'Suitcase Brothers', the duo of American blues formed 15 years ago with his brother, Victor Puertas. He is currently working on his new solo project and just recorded the fourth album with 'Suitcase Brothers' in Austin, TX (USA), which goes on sale this summer 2014.
Drew Davies
Drew Davies, singer & tenor saxman from the UK draws his inspiration from 40's swing and 50's rhythm 'n' blues, residing near Paris, France, the reputation of 'The Drew Davies Rhythm Combo', has brought them to numberous european festivals such as 'Jazz in Ascona, or the Breda Jazz Festival, and have led them to accompany artists such as Mike Sanchez or Kenny 'blues boss' Wayne, A recently released fourth album 'You Make Me Shake', featuring 10 original numbers and a couple of covers, sums up the energy of this dynamic combo who bring back the days of crowded dancefloors in a time when the tenor sax still ruled the stage.
Barcelona Big Blues Band
The Barcelona Big Blues Band is the only large format band dedicated exclusively to claim the Rhythm & Blues of the 40s and 50s in the line of the old big dancing bands. Conducted by Ivan Kovacevic, 13 of the best musicians in Barcelona take the stage to give life to this intense style.
The Black Resonators
Nathan and Shine form a duo called "The Black Resonators" from New Orleans. They’ve been three years playing original music and traveling around the United States and Mexico bringing their songs and stories that are very autobiographical. The duo has a full sound consisting of 2 voice and 2 resonator guitars (with metal case), with the addition of the "creole" accordion. His style is a mix of "gypsy blues," jazz and folk music. A melting pot that just like New Orleans is. Their concerts are interactive, fun, full of good music and good vibes experiences.
Room 69
Room 69 is the name of a band that brings the best of blues, country and swing. If we close our eyes we can identify the warm voice of Julio Vallejo, singer and alma mater of this group able to approach atmospheres of "country & western". Ry Cooder and John Hiatt are some references to ROOM 69. Besides Julio Vallejo, the band includes Manuel Ribera on violin, Xavi Sánchez on bass and Marc Thio on drums.
Joseph Brown & The Roomful of Swing
Led by Joseph Brown (alter ego of Jose Luis Pardo) on vocals, guitar and reverb, The Roomful of Swing embarks on such an exciting repertoire that is hard to sit still. We couldn’t define his style just like Swing or Rock and Roll. Nor only as Rockabilly, Blues or Jazz, but, however, we could say that we are enjoying seeing it all at once. His great strength is explained by the melting pot and genres that make the band complete with David Salvador Fructuoso on bass, Big Papa Dave on drums, saws Rafa Cañada Santiago tenor trombone and sax.
Testapazza
The Testapazza is an Italian-Catalan blues duo. Mattia Sinigaglia and Pol "Paolino" Jubany known each other in the winter of 2013 on the music scene in Barcelona. Early develop an understanding between the two and a passion for music from around the world, travel and urban art. The project takes shape to consolidate its characteristic acoustic blues sound, and last February win the V Blues Competition in Barcelona. Their repertoire is constantly evolving and explores heterogeneous terrain: from the classic Delta Blues to Cuban rhythms and sounds, through jazz manouche and including traditional Italian, Spanish and southamerican tunes.
A Contra Blues
A Contra Blues is an established band with over five years of activity and four edited recording projects. In his live repertoire, they mix the tradition within his own compositions, blending naturally to play with freshness and maturity both classic American music and new material. His energetic shows are full of experience, strength and empathy. A proposal that leaves no one indifferent and has led the group to be awarded on several occasions, most recently last April when they came out winners of the fourth edition of the "European Blues Challenge", considered the best European blues band of 2014.
The Big Jamboree & Big Dani Pérez
The Big Jamboree is a band dedicated to perform Rhythm & Blues, Jump & Jive, Jump Blues and Rock'n'Roll of the 50s. Their repertoire includes original compositions and arrangements by the band along with versions of classic artists as Louis Prima, Big Joe Turner, Louis Jordan and Wynonie Harris among others. Good atmosphere fills the stage making not only a concert, but a show, in which there is also an important aspect of interpretation. As its name implies: The Big Jamboree is "the big party"!
Bernat Font
Bernat Font is a young pianist of the Barcelona music scene. Started in classical music, his natural inclination toward improvisation and composition leads gradually towards jazz and blues. The first album of his trio, "The Shout" (Swit Records, 2011) won the Bed-Enderrock prize. In piano recitals displays his affinity with the blues, boogie woogie and older styles of jazz, with their own songs, covers of standards of the first half of the twentieth century or adapting other topics to this sound, looking for stylistic variety and proximity to the public.
Amadeu Casas
With extensive experience within the field of Blues, Amadeu Casas participated in the most ambitious projects of Blues in our country, being a founding member of prestigious groups as: Blues Reunion Blues Messengers, Slide Company or Tandoori Lenoir.
Golden Grahams
The Golden Grahams is a rock band with a unique and very impressive style from the sound of the seventies. Wherever they go bring their energetic show that surprises the audience for the sound they get from their instruments and, above all, the provocative attitude. In their own material we find reminiscences of the biggest rock bands of all time. The power-trio has played with several nationally and internationally known artists such as Tom Principato and Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones.
Mancuso
It’s a blues, funk and rock band formed in 2013. Almost all of its members were met at the Barcelona Blues School Workshop. Most of its components are experienced musicians in other formations as varied styles like rock, blues, swing, pop and even ska. Mancuso's repertoire is mostly based on versions of classic tracks from Chicago and Memphis blues by authors such as Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Howlin 'Wolf.
The Blouppers
The Blouppers is a young group of musicians who met at the Barcelona Blues School Workshop. Gradually, they are making a dent in the world of blues and swing in our country, performing in places like Almo2bar, Marula Café or the Impresentables Hoppers of La Garriga. They have learned from the best blues musicians in Catalonia, and show it making people dance with its commitment to jump blues and some swing.
The Bald’s Band
The Bald’s Band is a band from Nou Barris (Barcelona), established in March 2012. Their repertoire includes blues, rock, funk, soul, jazz and any nearby style. With components coming from different backgrounds and influences, and after recording a demo with four own songs ("The Bald s Band 2013"), promoting their stage work, they’re waiting to record an album with part of its broad and ever-growing repertoire.
Núria Benach
She is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Barcelona. She works on issues of cultural geography, urban geography, space and gender theory and geography. She is a member of the research group "Multiculturalism and Gender" and co-directs the publishing collection "Critical Areas". She researches on the relationship between poetry, music and city.
